Popis

Archaeological Monuments is one of the books from edition Cultural Heritage of Slovakia. These monuments are the oldest evidence of the life of our ancestors and they reflect the particular epochs.
Slovakia is a country rich in historic fortified or representative buildings, constructed as dwellings not only in AD but also in the BC periods. Numerous fortified settlements can be found in the territory of Slovakia, including the remains of mounds and fortifications, courts or dwellings, which date from various historical periods. In the past, these were the sites of historic
events and their owners influenced the course of life in the whole country for many centuries. Today, many of them are uncovered as archaeological excavations. Nižná Myšľa, a village in East Slovakia, is an example of a pre-historic settlement of the surrounding of Košice. Havránok documents the presence of the Celtic population in Liptov. Kostolec, situated on the edge of the Považský Inovec Mts, is a fortified court of a Great-Moravian nobleman. The developed Roman Era is documented by the preserved parts of a fortress near the village of Iža near Komárno, the uncovered foundations of a Roman military camp of Gerulata in Rusovce, a part of Bratislava, or the Villa Rustica in Veľká lúka in the territory of Dúbravka, a part of Bratislava.
All of these places, as well as many other places of our history, were chosen for the book you are holding in your hands. The book was also meant to be your guide around the aforesaid archaeological monuments and its goal is to provide the reader with a complex idea about each locality before the visit itself. The introductory part of each archaeological monument is dedicated to the description of its location and access roads. It is followed by a short outline of the history and the present condition of the location. It is illustrated by maps and photographs showing not only the present state of the monument, but also the finds that came from this area. We have chosen twenty of the most interesting Slovak archaeological locations, many of which are now small open-air museums. We are aware of the fact that our choice can provoke polemics and not everybody must identify with our ideas. Nevertheless, we intended to choose such localities that breathe with history and richness of archaeological artefacts and that are attractive for tourists as well.
