Castles and Chateaux

One of the parts of the collection Cultural Heritage of Slovakia is the book Castles and Chateaux which together with another book called Manor Houses continues the previous book about castles in ruins.
This book focuses on castles and chateaux, most of them being beautifully reconstructed, which house various museums. This is why we have chosen the most beautiful castles and chateaux not only from the visual point view, but also from the point of view of the existence of museum exhibitions. We made efforts to describe the chosen castles and chateaux in the way
similar to the way we described the previous castles in ruins. In a way, the book is meant to be a tourist guide about the castle (chateau) and its goal is to provide the reader with a complex image about it before the visit itself. Every presentation of the castle (chateau) starts with the description of its location and access and continues with the history and present time. The texts are interwoven with legends connected to the castle (chateau), its inhabitants and historical events. We have not forgotten old postcards, ground plans, maps and, of course, contemporary photos.
For our book we have chosen 20 Slovak castles and chateaux which we considered as most beautiful and which are more museums than ruins. We made efforts to choose such castles and chateaux which are the most beautiful also from the aesthetic point of view and are among the most beautiful tourist destinations. We hope that you will find our choice interesting and you will forgive the absence of “your favourite one”. We wish you a lot of agreeable experiences during your visits to the Slovak castles and chateaux and a lot of discoveries about their as well as our history.
